in a state of temporal flux – please try again later

Time goes, you say? Ah no!
Alas, Time stays, we go.
~Henry Austin Dobson

If that’s true, I’m so far gone today I don’t know when or where I am.

I haven’t had to deal with Daylight Savings Time in nearly 5 years, so this morning was something of a crisis for me. I can barely drag my ass out of bed at the “normal” time every morning, and now they want me up an hour earlier? So, I feel a little out of it.

Last night I watched a movie called What Time Is It There? and I must admit that I completely overlooked its relevance to the recent DST switch until I started to compose this post. The film takes place in Taiwan, where a watch vendor sells to a woman leaving for Paris the next day. Upon her departure, he goes around town switching every clock he can find to Paris time. Hilarity doesn’t ensue, but if you’ve seen any other Ming-liang Tsai films, you might have guessed at that. I really like his style, in the same way I like Wong Kar-wai and Jim Jarmusch. Human stories told with minimal interference. They hit me in the gut every time.

What Time Is It There is about being alone, and the dull despair of being lonely. It’s about our perception of time and distance, and the invisible connections between people worlds apart.

Ruf der Heimat

And now, Sigur Rós’s new film, ‘Heima’ in it’s entirety.

Lovely.

Walking to Save the Ta-Tas

When it comes to friends, I’m all about quality over quantity. I’m proud to say that I can count some amazingly generous & brave people among them; one of whom has supplied the title of this post.

My friend Wendy is participating in this year’s Breast Cancer 3-Day, a 60 mile fundraising walk to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure and National Philanthropic Trust.

As of this post, she’s received 20% of her goal of $2,200, which needs to be reached by May 1st. If you would like to donate, or would like to read more about Wendy’s participation in this event, please follow the links below. And feel free to leave your encouragement for her in the comments – I’m sure she’ll appreciate it!

Click to donate & read Wendy’s fundraiser blog:

Le silence des légumes

Due to being ridiculously busy both at home & at work, I’ve been rather neglectful of The Vegetable lately. Sumimasen.

If it’s any consolation, I do have some big posts planned, including a week-long series that really should have happened this week to be the most relevant, but oh well. In the meantime, I shall demonstrate the extent of my parenting/babysitting skills by sitting you kids down in front of the TV for a while:

Ah, well. That’s what I get for being a deadbeat parent. Thanks to those of you who pointed out that the above video was a malfunctioning embarassment & that you wished you had been adopted. Before you go to bed without supper, here’s a new link:

Note to Self…

It’s just a job.

Typesetting brochures & labeling maps is not your life. Nor your life’s work. So when someone tells you to change that black text to yellow or put arrows and starbursts all over your layout – just do it. Accept that there’s a certain client aesthetic called “We’re less intimidated by an obnoxious piece of crap than efficient and elegant design principles.”

Also accept that no amount of ranting or pleading to your supervisor is going to make the higher-ups see the light. And you know what? That’s their prerogative. That’s their taste level. So lighten up and have a little fun with it, goddammit. Try to come up with the most ridiculous graphics you can – and let the praise roll in. Hell, you might even get promoted.

Save your design instincts for your own art. It won’t kill your soul, promise.
